Chris McCain Got Crushed For His Ill-Advised Tom Brady Tweets
By Matt Dolloff (@mattdolloff)
BOSTON (CBS) -- What is it with nobodies chirping at the Patriots before games?
You've seen it many times before, most famously with Steelers backup cornerback Anthony "I can guarantee a win" Smith in 2007 and Eagles receiver Freddie "I got something for you" Mitchell before Super Bowl XXXIX. The Rex Ryan-led Buffalo Bills ran their mouths in Week 2 this season, and Brady emasculated them too.
The newest no-name to make a futile attempt at rattling Brady is the Dolphins' Chris McCain. And it's OK if you haven't heard of the second-year linebacker, because he has accomplished nothing of note. In fact, Tom Brady has more career tackles (9) than McCain (5), and they're tied in tackles this season with zero. McCain's career highlight (probably forever) is a blocked punt (pictured above) against the Patriots in Week 1 last season.
McCain may be a nobody, but that didn't stop him from trying to throw shade at Brady. He changed his avatar to a photo of him crushing Brady's head with the hashtag #CrushBrady. He originally posted it on Instagram back in July, but went noticed (since he is a nobody) until he tweeted it on Monday.
He later tweeted that his vendetta against Brady was "personal". Not sure what kind of personal problem McCain could possibly have with Brady, considering he has barely seen the field in the first season-and-a-half of his career.
And then McCain sheepishly acted like he wasn't expecting the backlash he got for changing his avatar. The classic "I can't believe people are making such a big deal about this!" follow-up tweet, as if that wasn't exactly what he wanted/expected.
Predictably, McCain's move drew plenty of reactions from both sides, and he was the one who got crushed. McCain must not realize he's accomplished nothing as an NFL player, because it was pretty easy for Patriots fans who had never heard of him before today to shut him down.
And there were also plenty of Dolphins fans who responded, apparently convinced that their team is somehow going to go to Foxboro and win on a short week with an interim head coach.
And of course, the Patriots fans came out to remind McCain what happens to those who trash-talk the Patriots. It usually doesn't end well.
You'd think this means McCain is the player who Brady will pick on when the teams take the field on Thursday. But McCain would not only need to make the active roster for that to happen, he would need to actually make it onto the field. Maybe they can go with a 9-man offensive line and have Brady dump it off to Gronk on every play.
