Patriots Blog: Will Tom Brady Play?
BOSTON (CBS) -- Tonight is the Patriots' final preseason game, and the question is, will Tom Brady see some action?
First and foremost, the offense may need the time on the field, so this may be a moot point. But even aside from that, in recent years, the answer to that question has been yes.
In 2002 and 2003, Tom Brady played more than one series in the final preseason game. In fact, in 2002, he started three series and went 7-for-10 for 59 yards. He didn't see any action in preseason game 4 from 2004-09. The starters in those games ranged from Rohan Davey to Doug Flutie to Matt Cassell and then Brian Hoyer.
Now in the last two preseasons, Brady has made an appearance in the final tune-up game. Last year, he played in four series and went 5-for-9 for 116 yards.
I think he will get some playing time tonight.
Belated Thoughts On The Cuts
Jabar Gaffney and Donte' Stallworth were big surprises on cut day. Stallworth lost out to Deion Branch and Gaffney, and just did not seem to want it. He hurt his leg and did not get back out there on the field. I'm not sure if he thought his comfort with Tom Brady and the offense had him as a shoo-in.
Here's something interesting though: Stallworth, Gaffney and tight end Chris Cooley are all on the market and all of them were a part of the Washington Redskins' receivers corps last year.
Josh Barrett and Spencer Larsen were not cut but placed on injured reserve. When first reported, it was said that they were cut. I am not sure eeither of them would have been able to make the team. You can also throw Will Allen (also on IR) into that mix.
