Patriots Blog: Gut Check Time For Ryan Mallett
BOSTON (CBS) — Preseason game number two is upon us.
Here are some items to pay attention to:
The Patriots offensive line will get some real focus tonight. Tom Brady and the first team are supposed to play. That means all systems go when protecting Number 12 and running the ball. This will be a good test. Can they get in and out of the huddle without any issues and can they keep Brady upright so he can make solid passes to the wide receivers?
Even a small sampling, in this case, is a good thing.
Rookie running back James White spent some time with the first team this week. If the Pats like him that much he may get the start tonight. He's played well in camp, and it'll be interesting to see how he'll fare with the top team.
All Darrelle Revis has to do is get on the field and people will talk. Not sure if Eagles quarterback Nick Foles will throw to his side, but Darrelle on the field changes what an offense can do. It will be good to see how teams have to adjust to his presence and how the Pats benefit from having him out there.
Ryan Mallett better have a better game. I'm not sure I have to say more than that.
Jimmy Garoppolo may get some time with the second team. If he does, how he shines will have a direct impact on the backup quarterback position. Last week, Garoppolo dominated his third string peers. It will be nice to see what he can do if he has to step up.
Would be nice to see Brandon LaFell catch some passes from Tom Brady and for Logan Ryan not to look confused if he's out there without the starters.
Finally, what is the over/under on the total number of defensive penalties in this game?
Pay attention and see if they slow the game down. My number is 20. The refs have been at camp and many of the plays flagged have been questioned by the players. Tonight they will be questioned by the fans.
