Roofs Buckle Across State As Weather Warms
BOSTON (CBS) --Several roofs collapsed in Massachusetts Wednesday as temperatures rose above 40 degrees for the first time in weeks.
At 7:35 a.m., authorities responded to a partial roof collapse at the Bayside Expo Center in Dorchester on Wednesday morning. The Boston Fire Department said no one was inside at the time, and no injuries were reported.
The building owned by UMass Boston is set to be demolished this summer.
A little more than an hour later, a 150-foot section of roof collapsed at an industrial complex on Sprague Street near the Dedham line, Boston fire officials said.
The collapse brought down three utility poles and created a gas leak, but authorities did not report injuries.
In Marshfield, the roof of a vacant commercial building collapsed overnight and will be demolished. Firefighters blame the collapse on heavy snow building up on the roof.
Attorney General Maura Healey sent out a statement Wednesday urging homeowners to be cautious and on alert for scams when hiring a contractor to clear their roof.
MEMA said there have been 188 reports of collapsed or damaged buildings since Feb. 9.
