Parents Of Hit-And-Run Victim Plead For Witness Info

BOSTON (CBS) -- The parents of the little girl hit by an SUV at the corner of Cambridge and North Harvard streets in Allston Saturday evening are asking for help in finding the driver.

6-year-old Melissa is said to be recovering, but police are still looking for the silver Jeep Cherokee that hit her. Police say it would have damage to the front end and headlights.

WBZ News Radio's Lana Jones reports.

Melissa was walking home from church with her parents Saturday evening after 8 p.m. when she was hit.

She's now in serious condition with what police call a life-altering head trauma.

"We're asking with our hearts. Please give us information if you have it. The person who hit our daughter did not hit an animal," Melissa's father pleaded during a news conference at Children's Hospital Monday afternoon. His wife, Melissa's mother, stood beside him, her face streaming with tears.

WBZ-TV's Christina Hager reports.

"Put your hand on your heart. Think about it, please. Call Boston Police," said Melissa's father through a Boston Police translator.

Police urged immigrants not to be afraid to call with information. "If you have a problem with immigration, your status as an immigrant, it is not a problem with the Boston Police Department. We will not ask you about that."

As for little Melissa, the doctor caring for her at Children's Hospital says she is showing signs of improvement. She has a broken pelvis, and bleeding in her lungs and brain. He says her long term prognosis is uncertain.
