Parcells On Brissett: 'I Am Glad That He Is With Bill Belichick'
BOSTON (CBS) -- It's still up in the air whether or not Jacoby Brissett will be the starting quarterback for the Patriots on Thursday night. But if he is, Bill Parcells believes the rookie will be put in a position to succeed.
The Hall of Fame coach knows Brissett well, dating back to Brissett's days in high school. Parcells famously praised Brissett after the Patriots drafted him, calling Brissett "a Curtis Martin, Willie McGinest, Troy Brown type player."
Obviously, Parcells believes in Brissett's abilities, but in the wake of the rookie being thrust onto the field this past weekend and likely again on Thursday night, Parcells also believes that Brissett is in the right environment.
"I am glad that he is with Bill Belichick, because I know that gives him the best chance for success," Parcells told the MMQB's Jenny Vrentas. "I'm not going into an exposé about that. I'm just telling you I'm glad he is there, and I think Bill gives him an excellent opportunity to be successful."
Parcells and Belichick have a history that extends back long before Brissett was even born, but it's clear that Belichick still has the support of his former boss.
Parcells revealed that his nickname for Brissett has been "One Snap," because the backup is always one snap away from getting in the game. Though that opportunity came sooner than most expected, Parcells said there's nothing Brissett can do except to prepare himself the way he always has.
"I certainly wish he had more time to ingest the material," Parcells told Vrentas. "The keys are always the same keys. Do your work. Do your preparation. Try to comprehend the plan of attack that the coaches have laid out for you and make sure that you have an understanding, to the best of your ability on a short week and your first time around the league and not much experience playing, to give yourself the best chance to be successful, knowing full well it probably won't go smoothly right away."
