Caleigh Harrison was last seen around midday on April 19 on Long Beach. Investigators believed she was swept out to sea, but family members have said she may have been kidnapped.
A pair of pink capri pants were found entwined in ocean debris on the northern end of Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester by a person walking the beach last Friday, State police said Monday afternoon.
"The debris appeared to have washed up onto the beach during a recent storm. The site of the discovery was approximately a mile south of the point where Caleigh was last seen," police said in a statement.
"The pants are consistent in size, color, and style with those that Caleigh Harrison was wearing when she disappeared while playing on Rockport's Long Beach. The pants have been shown to members of the child's family but we have not yet confirmed that they were those worn by Caleigh."
Caliegh was at the beach April 19 with her mother, Allison Hammond, and her four-year-old sister Lizzie.
Hammond told investigators she left the girls briefly to retrieve a ball that went over a seawall.
Police investigated a claim from Lizzie that she saw a strange man on the beach at the time of her sister's disappearance, but witnesses could not corroborate her story.
