Pan Mass Challenge Raises 33M For Cancer Research
BOSTON (AP) - Thousands of bicyclists raised $33 million for cancer research during an annual ride from Sturbridge to Cape Cod.
Organizers of the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge also announced Friday that the 31-year-old event has now gone over the $300 million mark for total fundraising.
All of the proceeds go to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's Jimmy Fund. A check for the $33 million raised in the Aug. 7-8 ride is being presented to the hospital on Friday.
Organizers say the 2010 total exceeded predictions and was up 8.6 percent from 2009, when for the first time in its history the Pan-Mass Challenge raised less money than it did in the previous year.
About 5,000 cyclists, including U.S. Sens. John Kerry and Scott Brown, rode some or all of the 190-mile route.
