Heavy Pablo Sandoval Off To Questionable Start
FORT MYERS, Fla. (CBS) - Red Sox positional players aren't due in camp until Tuesday, but third baseman Pablo Sandoval made his first appearance Sunday and he had not slimmed down.
He told reporters no one from the team asked him to lose weight in the off-season.
"I don't weigh in at all, so I just do my work, try to do everything I can out there. I don't weigh in," Sandoval said.
"We outlined to him we needed him to come back in better condition and along with that you anticipate there's the potential for weight to be dropped is there. But there wasn't a specific number given that said 'Hey, we want you to come in at this weight,'" Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters.
Sandoval also seemed to contradict himself at times.
WBZ-TV's Dan Roche asked him if he feels like he has a lot to prove this year, after hitting a disappointing .245 with 10 home runs and 47 RBI last season
"No, I don't go nothin' to prove," Sandoval said.
"I'm gonna prove to the fans, I'm gonna prove to my teammates that I can be a better defensive player, offensive player."
Then Roche asked him how confident he is about having a good 2016 season.
"Real motivated man," Sandoval said.
Second baseman Dustin Pedroia is expected to begin working out Monday.
Designated hitter David Ortiz was the last player to arrive, joining his teammates at his final spring training early Monday morning.
