There were accidents and spin-outs on several major roads in Massachusetts.
The Milton-Quincy stretch of Route 93 was particularly bad.
One crash there involved nine cars.
State police had to shut it down until sanders could treat the surface and tow trucks could get the disabled vehicles out of the way.
Further up the highway, in Somerville, a man was seriously injured when he was hit by a passing vehicle.
State police said his car broke down in the northbound lanes of I-93 near exit 29 and he may have been standing outside of the vehicle.
He was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.
And on Route 2 in Gardner, a woman was killed in a two-car crash near exit 22.
State police say she was traveling eastbound and crossed the median into the westbound lanes and collided with a pickup truck.
She was pronounced dead at Heywood Hospital.
The driver of the pickup suffered minor injuries.
