Over 1,000 Run To Honor Slain Brentwood, NH, Police Officer
BRENTWOOD, New Hampshire (CBS) - It was an incredible out pouring of love, compassion and support for a police officer who paid the ultimate price.
"Officer Stephen Arkell. Our brother, our friend, in us you live forever," Brentwood Police Officer Joshua Turner said during the Saturday ceremony.
Brentwood police officer Arkell enjoyed life to the fullest. The 48 year old was shot and killed nearly a year ago after responding to a domestic dispute.
Everyone in this community painfully misses him, especially his family.
"I miss his smile. When someone is taken from you at such (an) early age, (it's a) very difficult thing," Arkell's brother David Arkell said.
Arkell was a 17-year veteran of the police department.
"We are keeping busy and keeping his memory alive," his widow, Heather Arkell said.
Thousands took part in the inaugural Stephen Arkell Community 5K race. After a moment of silence, dozens of high school sports team and first responders ran with pride.
"I am just touched by the outpouring of community support. Stephen would be so humbled by it," Heather Arkell said.
More than 2000 runners came to pay tribute and to help raise money for the Stephen Arkell Memorial Scholarship.
"This fund will award many high school students who best exemplify Arkell's love for his community, sports and family, " Turner said.
The event raised more than $60,000 dollars in scholarships.
