Ortiz Takes Arbitration, Rejoins Red Sox
BOSTON (CBS) – Designated hitter David Ortiz has accepted salary arbitration from the Boston Red Sox and will return to the team for at least the 2012 season.
Ortiz will make more than the $12.5 million he made with Boston in 2011. He had been seeking a multi-year deal this offseason, and Boston had reportedly offered him a two-year, $18 million deal, but decided the one-year commitment would be worth more.
There is still a chance the two sides could work out a multi-year deal.
Ortiz, who turned 36 last month, hit .309 with 29 home runs and 96 RBI for the Red Sox last season. He has averaged 29 homers and 99 RBI over the last three seasons in Boston.
