Opening Statements Expected Wednesday In Whitey Bulger Trial

BOSTON (CBS) - Opening statements in the Whitey Bulger trial are now expected to begin Wednesday, two days later than originally planned.

U.S. District Court Judge Denise Casper made the announcement in court Wednesday, shortly before 100 more potential jurors were brought in to fill out questionnaires.

That would bring the total number of prospective jurors to 858. Twelve jurors and six alternates will be chosen.

With so many questionnaires for both sides to review, Casper pushed back the start of the trial two days to give attorneys more time.

Bulger's attorney also requested that two Boston Globe reporters be excluded from the courtroom during the trial because they've interviewed some witnesses who'll testify in the case.

The reporters, Shelley Murphy and Kevin Cullen, have both reported extensively on the Bulger investigation.

Casper took the matter under advisement and did not issue a ruling.
