According to investigators, the victim, a resident of that apartment, told them he had been "experimenting" with mixing chemicals.
He was rushed to Brigham and Women's Hospital. His condition was not immediately known.
Boston police said there were a number of chemicals and a large amount of white powder found inside the apartment.
Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said during a news conference that there does not appear to be any specific connection to drugs or terrorism.
The bomb squad and hazmat crews are on scene, and the incident is being treated as a criminal investigation.
A second person who lives in the apartment was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center to be treated for respiratory issues.
Three other victims were also treated at the scene for minor injuries.
