Video Shows Dramatic End To High-Speed Police Chase

MIDDLEBORO(CBS) -- A driver is in custody after Massachusetts State Police say he led them on a high-speed chase through several towns on Cape Cod and in Plymouth County Monday morning, sometimes reaching speeds of about 100 mph and going the wrong way.

Video shot from the State Police helicopter released later in the day shows authorities smashing the passenger side window of the car after it had stopped, and then pulling the driver from the car to the ground.

Cary Guy Jr., 24, of Dighton, is facing charges of assault by means of a dangerous weapon, leaving the scene of property damage, failing to stop for a police officer, and operating to endanger.

The pursuit started on Sandlewood Drive in Barnstable around 9:30 a.m. when Barnstable Police tried to pull the driver of a 2017 red Hyundai Sonata over for having an expired license and no inspection sticker.

Barnstable police said they broke off the chase after the driver took off on Rte. 28 toward Rte. 30 and Mashpee, then into Sandwich.

In Sandwich, officers gave chase after a 911 caller reported someone driving erratically.

At one point, Sandwich Police said, Guy was driving on the wrong side of the road, passing cars at high speed. They said he drove directly at two Sandwich cruisers, and that they had to go off the road to avoid a collision.

A third Sandwich cruiser was run off the road before the chase left the Cape, and Massachusetts State Police took over.

State Police were able to stop the driver by pinning them in on a ramp at Rtes. 44 and 495 in Middleboro.

Barnstable Police said the driver's name did not match the registered owner of the car.

No serious injuries were reported, though three Sandwich Police cruisers were damaged and one Sandwich officer was taken to an area hospital with a minor injury.

Guy is being held without bail and is set to be arraigned in Wareham District Court on Tuesday.
