Offshore Wind Co. Holds Meeting For Mass. Fishers
BOSTON (AP) -- A fishing industry-owned offshore wind company is inviting fishermen to a meeting on wind farm development off the Massachusetts coast.
Fishermen's Energy, based in Cape May, N.J., is planning the meeting for Monday in New Bedford.
The federal government has begun seeking proposals for commercial-scale wind farms off the coast in an area that includes rich fishing grounds.
Fishermen's Energy says it's sponsoring the meeting because it doesn't think fishermen are fully aware of the scale of the planned development. The company says it works to ensure the industry is preserved amid wind development. It said it also advocates direct payments to fishermen affected by offshore wind projects.
The company has an eight-turbine project planned off Atlantic City, N.J., and a 66-turbine project planned further off the coast.
