October snow coats northern New England
Parts of the Adirondacks are seeing the season's first significant snowfall. The National Weather Service says two inches of snow fell Friday at Lake Placid and that higher elevations experienced heavier accumulations.
Snow also fell across higher elevations in Vermont. Killington Resort got anywhere from 4 to 10 inches of snow from a passing Nor'easter.
Accumulations started Friday morning at the base of Killington Peak.
For drivers, the wet snow formed by temperatures dipping near 30 started at the Vermont Inn on Route 4 in Mendon and continued east past Woodstock and into New Hampshire. Highway crews plowed and cleared accumulations.
The Rutland Herald reports heavy downpours Friday caused sharp rises in streams, with some rivers approaching flood stage including the Otter Creek and Lamoille, Winooski, Missisquoi and Mad rivers.
Early-season snow is not uncommon in either the Adirondacks or Vermont
