"Occupy" Group Setting Up Camp In Providence, Rhode Island
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The group Occupy Providence is set to begin its occupation of a city park on Saturday in an effort to "give voice" to Rhode Islanders they say have been disenfranchised as corporate interests have become more powerful.
The group said in a mission statement earlier this week that it intends to gather in Burnside Park downtown for as long as it takes "to build a society by, for and of the people."
Two Occupy Providence activists met with Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare and other city officials Thursday at the city's request to discuss the event. Pare says the group is not seeking a permit and will stay in the park for 24 to 48 hours.
