Observations From Patriots-Eagles Day 2: As Tempo Picks Up, So Does Offense
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Patriots and Eagles are back at it for their second of three joint practices here in Philadelphia -- and a little earlier than originally planned today.
Bill Belichick and Chip Kelly decided to move up today's practice due to inclement weather heading into the area this afternoon. The Eagles also have a special guest, with long-time Philly coach Dick Vermeil on hand for today's session.
The two teams started on their own once again on Wednesday before joining forces to get in some Red Zone passing work. Tom Brady and Ryan Mallet alternated throwing to wide outs, and the Eagles defensive backs fared much better this time around than they did yesterday. That seems to be the overall theme in the early go of things today.
12:22 p.m. Update: In the second half of today's practice session we're seeing a lot of situational football.
The Patriots offense did not look as sharp as they did on Tuesday, but it came to life when they went to hurry-up, 2-minute situations. Brady hit Dobson (who returned from his calf scare) twice -- with the rookie making beautiful catches each time. Brady also hit Thompkins with a deep touchdown pass.
But emotionally, the play of the day was when Brady hit Thompkins on a back shoulder pass near the goal line. It was a great throw, a great catch, and the sideline erupted following the play. It's been a lot of fun to watch the energy come from the players the last two days.

11:49 a.m. Update: Standouts for the Patriots so far include receivers Danny Amendola and Kenbrall Thompkins and tight end Zach Sudfeld, who had a nice one-handed grab for a touchdown in 7-on-7 drills.
There were a few injury concerns early on, with rookie receiver Aaron Dobson having his left calf looked at on the sidelines. Corners Alfonzo Dennard and Kyle Arrington were also shaken up, so we'll keep an eye on them the rest of the afternoon.
