Northbridge Teenager Struck By School Bus

NORTHBRIDGE (CBS) – A teenager suffered multiple skull fractures Wednesday after being struck by a school bus while riding his bike in Northbridge.

At about 2 p.m. Northbridge police received a 911 call about an accident on Linwood Ave., not far from the entrance to Northbridge High School.

Police said the victim was a 15-year-old student who was riding his bike when the bus hit him. A medical helicopter was requested to the scene but was unable to make the flight. Instead, the boy was taken by ambulance, but a UMass Medical ambulance had to meet Uxbridge EMTs halfway when the boy's condition worsened.

According to WBZ-TV's Katie Brace, the teenager took a wide turn out of the school directly into the path of the bus, which was being driven at about 30 MPH. Police said the driver had no time to react, striking the boy, who was thrown about 40 feet.

Several students witnessed the accident and several adults rushed to help, including school nurses.

Northbridge police said the bus driver was visibly upset and called it a "horrible accident." According to police, the man has no criminal record and has been driving for the school bus company for 13 years.

The boy, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered multiple skull fractures but is expected to survive, police said. The teen's mother says he is in a medically induced coma and started riding his bike to school to avoid bullying.
