North End Water Main Break Floods Street

BOSTON (CBS) --- A water main break flooded a street and made a mess in the North End Tuesday morning.

Prince Street was closed from Hanover to Salem Street while crews worked to shut off water and repair the break, which happened just after 6 a.m.

About 20 nearby businesses and residences were impacted by the break, the Boston Water and Sewer Commission said. Officials confirmed it was an old, 12-inch cement water main that broke, but they're not sure why yet.

"I opened the door and I looked and it was just gushing out of the ground," said Augustine Parziale, owner of a bakery bearing his family's name. "Definitely, it will cut into our business."

There was damage to the roadway and sidewalks near the break. Crews said the affected area of Prince Street could be closed for most of the day.

Water to nearby buildings was shut off, and is expected to be turned on by about 5 p.m.
