North Carolina Couple Arrested In Braintree With $60,000 Cash In Truck
BRAINTREE (CBS) -- A North Carolina couple was arrested Thursday in Braintree with a truck full of $60,000 cash, jewelry, rare coins and other items believed to have been stolen from homes across the country.
Police say George DeMetro, 36, of Wilkesboro, NC and Dina Miller, 42, of Boone, NC, were arrested after allegedly entering an elderly couple's home under false pretenses.
Authorities say the two went to a home on Burton Road and told the 75-year-old homeowner they were there from the state and needed to check electrical wires. The woman reported that Miller distracted her at the front door while DeMetro went inside and upstairs where the homeowner's husband said DeMetro was in the bedroom.
Police say DeMetro told the couple he ran the water in the bathroom and said he was checking the water, and then both DeMetro and Miller left.
It's unclear whether the duo took any items from the Burton Road home.
After the homeowner reported the incident to police officers pulled over a truck that matched the woman's description on Granite Street. The woman was brought to the location and identified DeMetro and Miller.
Both were arrested and Miller's two sons, ages nine and 10, were turned over to the Department of Children and Families.
DeMetro and Miller are charged with daytime entry by false pretenses and receiving stolen property over $250.
Police have not identified the other victims, but based on receipts found in the truck officers believe the couple has traveled throughout the country.
