North Attleboro Woman Charged With Embezzling $165K From URI Sorority
SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP/CBS) — A North Attleboro woman has been charged with embezzling $165,000 from a University of Rhode Island sorority.
The Rhode Island State Police said Wednesday that 40-year-old Tanya McGinn was arrested following a year-long investigation into missing housing funds.
The funds are controlled by a board that oversees the Alpha Phi sorority house. McGinn was president of the board from 2003 to 2009.
Police say their investigation showed that $165,000 of the sorority's capital funds were funneled into bank accounts owned by McGinn. Their investigation began after a representative of the board filed a complaint.
McGinn was released on $5,000 cash bail. She is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 29.
McGinn lists her job on Facebook as a stylist for home jewelery retailer Stella & Dot.
Attempts to reach McGinn on Wednesday were unsuccessful.
