67-year-old Barbara Coyne was found bleeding in her apartment on Seventh Street by her son Monday morning. Her throat had been slashed by an intruder.
She was rushed to a hospital where she died.
Police believe Coyne may have been attacked during a robbery.
One of her daughters is married to the brother of former Boston police commissioner Paul Evans.
A single police cruiser stood watch in front of Coyne's home Tuesday.
There have been no arrests.
Neighbors said there have been several break-ins recently in the area.
"Scary things do happen in nice places like this. So everyone's got to have their guard up a little bit," Megan Capobianco told WBZ-TV Tuesday. Capobianco lives two doors down from Coyne's apartment.
"Everybody's just in shock. We don't know what to think," resident Bill Doyle said.
