Nine More Dolphins Rescued On Cape Cod
BREWSTER (CBS) - Another dolphin rescue in Brewster Wednesday night brings the total number of stranded dolphins on Cape Cod to 111 since the new year began. The large number has the head of the International Fund for Animal Welfare going to Washington Friday to ask federal lawmakers for help.
"We think part of it is our geography. We know this area is very tidal. We have a lot of sand flats," says IFAW's stranding director, Brian Sharp. He adds that the reason dolphins keep washing up is still a mystery.
Researchers have performed necropsies on those that did not survive, but they have not been able to find an explanation.

In the most recent incident, rescuers carried nine dolphins from a sand bar about an eighth of a mile off the Brewster shore. They drove them in trailers to deeper waters off Truro, and released them back into the ocean. All nine survived.
They've put satellite tags on four rescued in the last month. One showed up off the coast of Maine.
