NHL Turns To Twitter Hashtags To Promote Playoffs
BOSTON (CBS) -- It's nothing new for hockey fans to share their enthusiasm for their teams, but now the NHL is making it a little easier for fans to share their excitement with fellow fans.
The NHL announced it has official hashtags for the playoffs and Stanley Cup final. A hashtag is used on Twitter to identify a topic, location, or in this case, a team or series of games. It uses the pound sign (#) followed by a phrase or abbreviation.
The NHL's official hashtag for the first three rounds of play is #NHLPlayoffs, and once the play enters the Stanley Cup Final, it will switch to #StanleyCup.
During the first three rounds, the NHL is encouraging people on Twitter to use specific tags when talking about a series. For example, the Boston Bruins/Montreal Canadiens series' hashtag is #BosMtl. The Washington Capitals/New York Rangers hashtag is #WasNYR.
As teams advance, the NHL says it will continue to use the three letter codes for teams putting the higher ranked team first.
