NH Native Wounded In San Bernardino Shooting
HINSDALE, NH (CBS) - One of the 21 survivors of the attack in San Bernardino, California is a New Hampshire native.
Amanda Gaspard grew up in Hinsdale, New Hampshire - just across the river from Brattleboro, VT. The 32-year-old moved to California three years ago, where she works as a restaurant inspector for San Bernardino County.
Relatives tell WBZ Amanda was in surgery most of the day Thursday. She was shot several times in the leg, the arm and had shrapnel in her head, but she is expected to recover.
Fourteen people were killed when a man and woman opened fire at the Inland Regional Center Wednesday.
Gaspard's parents still live in Hinsdale and are with their daughter in California now.
In an interview with the Adventist Review, Amanda's mother, Diane Gaspard, described what happened during that holiday party.
"She was in charge of the meeting that day. In God's mercy, she had just dismissed everyone for a short break or there would have been more people in the room... We believe that because of her loving kindness the shooter did not kill her. He stood over her and shot her. He could easily have aimed at her head but shot her in the leg instead."
Gaspard worked at the Cheshire Medical Center from 2009 through 2012. Her father, Kenneth Gaspard RN, is the director of surgical services.
"These horrendous occurrences that seem so far away, have this time clearly touched us as a community," said Don Caruso, Chief Medical Officer of Cheshire Medical Center. "All of us at Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth-Hitchcock Keene are keeping Amanda, her dad Ken and mom Diane and family, and all of the other victims in our thoughts and prayers."
