NH-Maine Bridge Pier Damaged In Tanker Collision
PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) — Transportation officials say an underwater inspection of a bridge between Maine and New Hampshire that was hit by an oil tanker shows that one of the piers was damaged.
Bill Boyton, a spokesman for the New Hampshire Department of Transportation said Wednesday that the damage is being evaluated to determine whether any repairs are needed.
He said two of the bridge's truss elements need to be replaced and others are being analyzed to see if they can be repaired or need to be replaced.
The work is expected to take four weeks.
The oil tanker somehow broke loose from a pier on Monday and struck the bridge connecting Portsmouth, N.H., to Kittery, Maine. No one was injured, and the Coast Guard said it found no signs of any leaks.
