NH gun shop cleared in sale of gun to Markoff
Federal prosecutors say there's no evidence a New Hampshire gun store violated laws by selling alleged Craigslist killer Philip Markoff the semiautomatic handgun used to kill a masseuse he met on Craigslist.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Donald Feith said Tuesday that Markoff presented photo identification belonging to a New York man that closely resembled him, and lied about his identity on a federal form required for the purchase.
Officials say Markoff committed suicide Sunday in his jail cell in Massachusetts.
Feith said Markoff could have been imprisoned for up to 10 years for making false statements on the form.
A lawyer for the family of the masseuse, Julissa Brisman, blames State Line Gun Shop in Mason for not doing enough to verify his identity. The gun shop's owner couldn't be reached Tuesday.
