NFL Players Vote Bill Belichick As Second-Most Overrated Coach
BOSTON (CBS) -- Bill Belichick is guaranteed to be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame not long after he decides his NFL coaching career is over. Yet, the current players just don't seem to appreciate that history.
The Sporting News polled 103 players from 27 NFL teams in various categories, including the most overrated coach in the league. Rex Ryan finished first by a large margin with 35 votes, but finishing second was Belichick.
Belichick, 60, ranks 10th in NFL history with 180 wins, six behind Chuck Knox and 10 behind Dan Reeves. Belichick's 17 playoff victories rank him third behind Tom Landry and Don Shula, and his three Super Bowl titles have him tied for second-most of all time, behind only Chuck Noll. In his 12 full seasons as the Patriots' head coach, he's led the team to an average of 11.6 wins per season, reaching the playoffs nine times and the Super Bowl five times.
Nevertheless, Belichick received 16 votes in the poll, in which no players could vote for their own coach. Andy Reid, who's hot seat continues to warm this season, finished third with nine votes, followed by the Redskins' Mike Shanhan with eight votes.
In the same Sporting News poll, players voted the Patriots as the best organization with 34 votes. The Steelers finished second with 24 votes, and the New York Giants were third with 19 votes. The players also voted Michael Vick as the league's most disappointing player.
