Newton Police Investigate Possible Abandoned Baby Incident

NEWTON (CBS) - State and Newton police are investigating the possibility of an abandoned baby.

They're looking for the public's help.

On Friday evening, a resident on Otis Street was taking in his trash barrels and found a cardboard box inside his recycling bin.

There was a handwritten note attached to the package, stating that a teenage mom named Bimini had left her 4-month-old infant named Sonny inside the box.

WBZ-TV's Paul Burton reports.

As of Sunday night, police said no baby had been found. Neither the author of the note nor anyone matching the description of the mom has been found.

Officers say there was address label on the box but they don't believe the person at that address had anything to do with the incident.

Saturday evening, State Police said that specially trained officers were thoroughly combing through debris at a recycling plant in Avon, which is where the contents of the Newton recycle bin would have been taken.

Police sent out a reverse 911 call to residents asking for any information on the incident.

In particular, they are asking anyone who might know a 15-year-old mom named Bimini with a 4-month old named Sonny to please contact them.

They say they aren't sure whether the incident is real or a hoax, but they're taking it seriously.

"We are not in a position to say with absolute certainty whether a baby was really abandoned or whether it was a hoax. We hope it was a hoax because the other scenario is so terrible," said State Police spokesperson Dave Procopio.

Procopio said Newton officers will be at the Avon recycling plant on Monday as a precaution.

Anyone with information is asked to call Newton police.
