Newton Mayor Setti Warren Drops Out Of Senate Race

NEWTON (CBS) - Setti Warren stood with his wife on the front lawn of the home where he grew up and now lives and announced on Thursday he will drop out of the race for U.S. Senate.

"I got into this race for one reason, and one reason only: To beat Scott Brown. And I'm getting out for one reason and one reason only: Because I no longer believe I have a clear path to victory in this race," said Warren, the mayor of Newton and Iraq War veteran.

What's the obstacle?

Elizabeth Warren.

Setti Warren said he doesn't believe he has the money or political support to win.

"Elizabeth Warren has captured the imagination of Democrats nationally and here in this state. She has changed the dynamics of the race certainly for me, and it was clear to be because of that I was not able to go on and win," he said.

Warren said he's not sure which is tougher: the Red Sox loss Wednesday night or making the announcement the next day.

Elizabeth Warren is a Harvard Law Professor and former aide to President Obama who joined the race earlier this month.

"He ran a positive and energetic campaign, focused on the importance of shared responsibility and a common purpose--a message that is important to all of us," she said in a statement Thursday.

In his speech, Setti Warren talked about his time in Iraq when he and his fellow soldiers saw the worst of humanity and bonded together for a common purpose, and said he will continue to work to capture a bond here at home to move forward as a country.

Warren's wife, Tassy, said she and their children, 3-year-old Abilgail and 4-month-old John, look forward to seeing more of Setti and are all very supportive of his decision.

Warren wouldn't say if he plans to seek another term as Mayor of Newton, and hasn't decided if he will endorse a candidate in the Senate race.
