New Nutritional Guidelines May Force Chocolate Milk Off School Menu

MANSFIELD (CBS) - Some new state and federal guidelines may do away with a school kid favorite: chocolate milk.

The nutritional guidelines for school lunches said a flavored milk must have less than 22 grams of sugar per 8 ounces, which means chocolate milk would be off the lunch menu and out of school vending machines.

Mansfield is among the first local communities to have to deal with the issue. Mansfield Food Services Director Dawn Langtry said they are trying to come up with tasty alternatives.

"The dairy industry as a whole is working hard to meet these requirements and give us things we can offer our students. In time, we'll be able to hopefully continue to do this," said Langtry.

The move, which would begin next August, is part of an effort to combat childhood obesity and diabetes.
