New Hampshire Women Make History On Election Day
MANCHESTER, NH (CBS) - In New Hampshire, the women rule.
Maggie Hassan was elected governor, and Carol Shea-Porter and Annie Kuster won their races for Congress.
"It says the voters are very pragmatic, very smart, they size up each individual," says Shea-Porter.
The three join U.S. Senators Kelly Ayotte and Jeanne Shaheen as the top elected officials in the state.
"I can only imagine all the young girls in elementary school and middle school now looking up and thinking 'wow I can be like Maggie Hassan'," says Manchester voter Margaret Bingel.
Political Science professor Michael Contarino, Director of the Politics and Society Program at the University of New Hampshire Manchester, says the female success says more about policy than it does about gender.
"They represent women particularly well on social issues which became a major factor," says Contarino.
