New Documents Unsealed In Boston Marathon Bombing Case
BOSTON (CBS) - New documents were unsealed Wednesday in the Boston Marathon bombing case that reveal what happened in the hours after Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured. The court is unsealing about 600 documents, representing thousands of pages.
One of the first that came out paints a new picture of a badly injured Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in the hospital, and accuses the government of denying him his rights, and even lying to him about his brother.
In the document Tsarnaev's lawyers say he suffered "gunshot wounds, including one to the head, which likely caused traumatic brain injury." It adds that he was on serious pain medication and, "his left eye was sutured shut, his jaw was wired closed, and injuries to his left ear left him unable to hear on that side."
Despite all that, they say the FBI questioned the younger Tsarnaev on and off for 36 hours. During that time and unable to speak because of a trach tube, the attorneys say Tsarnaev repeatedly asked for a lawyer. "He wrote the word 'lawyer' ten times, sometimes circling it," according to the document. But no lawyer was provided.
His attorneys also say he begged the authorities to leave him alone saying "I'm hurt. Can we do this later? You said you were going to let me sleep."
The document also charges that agents lied, telling Dzhokar that his brother Tamerlan was still alive. They say Dzhokar asked them, "Is my brother alive? I know you said he is. Are you lying?"
The documents also describe what authorities were searching for at the bombing scene, the Tsarnaev's apartment and Dzhokar's dorm room. They also outline the examination of tiny details like what kind of tape, glue and caulk was used to make the bombs.
