New Bedford Standard-Times Editor Steps Down To Avoid Layoffs
NEW BEDFORD (CBS) - Another story of newspaper layoffs is really not news anymore, following years of downsizing at traditional newspapers large and small.
But this change at the Standard-Times of New Bedford is very different.
The editor of the Standard-Times, Bob Unger, has announced instead of ordering two or three more layoffs; he'll take the hit himself.
"I was in a position to be able to say I think it would make more sense to lay me off, than it would to perhaps to take some kind of action to eliminate two or three other editorial positions," Unger said.
Unger says the newspaper is still facing a challenging revenue situation but the paper must face reality of what it's producing.
"Like everyone else in this business, like newspapers everywhere, we have undergone layoffs and consolidation at positions and so on over the past six or seven years," Unger says. "And there comes a point where you have to look at what your overall mission is."
The Standard-Times newspaper was recently acquired by Gatehouse Media.
