New Bedford Fishing Boat Rescued In Rough Seas Off NY
NEW BEDFORD (CBS) – Despite some rough seas, a New Bedford fishing crew is home safe after their ship's engine gave out in the open ocean.
The 85-foot scalloper Paul & Michelle and its crew of seven was heading home around 2:30 a.m., when it became disabled about 26 miles off Montauk, N.Y.
In 20-25 knot winds and 5-8 foot seas, Boston-based Coast Guard Cutter Seneca towed the ship into Rhode Island waters, where a salvage vessel picked it up and returned the vessel to New Bedford.
"We are very happy to have the fishing vessel Paul & Michelle and her crew safely in port," said Cmdr. Charles Fosse, the commanding officer of the Seneca. "The formidable on scene weather with high seas and gusting winds made this a difficult towing mission and I'm very proud of my crew who executed their demanding roles professionally with positive results."
