New Bedford Woman Recalls Being Attacked In Dartmouth Carjacking

DARTMOUTH (CBS) -- A New Bedford woman waiting for her son to get out of work at closing time was carjacked in a Dartmouth parking lot.

Holly Medeiros says she was sitting in the front seat checking her emails when she heard someone say "excuse me." When she turned around, she says 47-year-old Jeffrey Link lunged through the driver's side window, pushing her over to the passenger seat.

"He was swearing at me, telling me he was going to kill me if I didn't get out of the car," Medeiros told WBZ.

She says she struggled with her attacker and was met with a beer bottle to the face.

"I was pretty scared. Once he hit me, I was scared and realized this was serious," Medeiros says.

Medeiros needed four stitches in her broken nose after a piece of glass became embedded. She managed to stumble out of the car and says Link took off at a high rate of speed.

Fortunately, her cellphone was still in the car and with a "Find My Phone" app, police were able to locate Link about 15 minutes later on Purchase Street in New Bedford.

Link hid his face in court Thursday as he was arraigned on charges including carjacking, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, threat to commit a crime, and assault to maim.

He already has federal gun charges on his record, and bail was revoked on other charges including indecent assault on a minor out of Fall River.

Medeiros believes she's lucky to have broken away from her attacker.

"It could have been much worse, especially with me trying to fight him," she said. "He could have had a gun. He could have had a knife.

Link is being held on $250,000 bail.
