Dozens of children welcomed into forever families on National Adoption Day in Massachusetts
BROCKTON - More than 100 children and teenagers in foster care across Massachusetts were welcomed into their forever families Friday as part of National Adoption Day.
Impactful step forward
At the courthouse in Brockton, 20 of those adoptions took place. Among the group of lucky families were Niya and Irvin Alcindor, who adopted 6-year-old Lulu. They also have three biological sons and two other foster children, a family that Lulu is now thrilled to be a part of.
Niya Alcindor said Lulu has been a member of their family from the day she entered their home but making it official is an impactful step forward.
"From extended family to friends, everyone knows her as our daughter," said Niya Alcindor.
The Alcindors believe that Lulu was always destined to be a part of their family and they are already feeling the rewards of parenting her.
"Transformative power of love"
"Getting all the joys and pleasures of being part of this child, molding them into someone who identifies with you and your beliefs and an opportunity to love beyond the traditional method of giving birth," said Niya Alcindor.
Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll attended the adoption ceremony, bringing a congratulatory message to the new families. She said that the parents are not only changing the lives of the children but also changing the community as a whole.
"To the parents who have chosen to adopt, your decision is a profound reminder of the transformative power of love. You prove stability, hope and belonging to children who deserve nothing less," said Driscoll.
For the Alcindor family, officially welcoming Lulu into the family was a dream come true, something Niya said will be a lasting memory.
