Nanny Accused Of Stealing From Wayland Family

WAYLAND (CBS) - Dre Rossi and Chris Hopkins say they had no idea the nanny they entrusted their two children to was robbing them of jewelry and putting their 22-month-old son at risk.

"She admitted to stealing items from us. She has pawned some of our stuff up in Lowell and taken him places she never should've taken him. It's a nightmare it really is," Rossi said.

The couple says they hired 26-year-old Catherine Oppen a year ago from the company Care.com in Waltham.

"It's very frustrating because we did believe in her and let her live with us in some of her toughest times," Hopkins said.

Oppen even got into a car accident with their son and lied about what town the accident occurred. "It's left us gravely concerned," Rossi said.

Oppen now faces four counts of larceny. On Tuesday, she left the courthouse refusing to comment.

Care.com released a statement saying: "This is an unfortunate matter and our thoughts are with the family. When we were notified about this incident, we immediately closed the provider's account, banned her so she is unable to rejoin in the future, and notified any families she had been in contact with that her profile had been closed."

Now both Chris and Dre want to encourage parents to get extensive background checks when hiring a nanny. "I do caution for anyone looking for care for their children to do some extensive research because some of the answers you are looking for are not easy to find," Hopkins said.

Oppen will be summonsed to court later this month.
