Truck & Front End Loader Trapped By High Tide In Duxbury
DUXBURY (CBS) - High tide and heavy machinery do not go well together, which is why a front end loader and a pick up truck are under water at Duxbury Bay.
"Not a great idea to drive this heavy machinery down here," Duxbury Police Chief Kevin Nord said.
Officials say on Friday morning, a contractor repairing pilings on Powder Point Bridge got his pick-up truck stuck during low tide. To make matters worse, another contractor working on the beach came to bail him out with a front end loader and got his truck stuck as high tide set in.
"It's unfortunate and unquestionable and it appears no good deed goes unpunished," Town Manager Richard MacDonald said.
The Department of Public Works, Department of Environmental Protection and fire officials deployed booms to help protect from any oil or fuel leaks. By Friday afternoon the water was too deep to remove the heavy machinery out of the murky bay.
Officials say the contractor has been working on the bridge for the past few months but was not authorized to drive a pick up truck under the bridge. "This is a first and hopefully a last," DPW Director Peter Buttkus said. No one was injured in the incident.
The pick up truck was pulled from the bay later Friday night. The front end loader will be removed Saturday.
