Mud Making A Major Mess On Roads In NH
GILMANTON, N.H. (CBS/AP) — Mud has become a major problem in the town of Gilmanton, N.H.
Several school buses wound up stuck in the mud this week as thawing dirt roads in New Hampshire have made for some tough commuting.
Gilmanton Road Agent Paul Perkins say many of the dirt roads in town are in bad shape. And while the mud is a problem that residents expect to deal with, some say it's the worst they've ever seen.
One resident, Bill Smith fears that the mud has become a safety issue.
"It's a life safety thing. If there's a fire, this place is going to burn to the ground because they can't get the fire trucks there," Smith said.
Another resident, Courtney Kelly knows that emergencies can become an even bigger issue because of the roads. His daughter needed to be rushed to the hospital, knee deep mud delayed help.
"We're so thankful that they were able to get here and things worked out the way they did, but there were some tense moments," he said.
As far as the buses go, one, which got stuck for hours Thursday, was eventually helped by the fire department. The school district has since changed the bus routes.
Perkins said his crews are laying gravel and stone where they can to patch the roads.
