Mosaic From Old Scollay Square Station Uncovered During MBTA Renovations

BOSTON (CBS) – Crews working on renovation of the MBTA's Government Center station found a piece of subway history.

A 100-year-old Scollay Under mosaic was uncovered on the wall of the Blue Line platform.

The MBTA said it plans to keep the mosaic and build around it.

Scollay Under was the stop beneath what used to be Scollay Square where Government Center is now located.

In the lyrics of the song "Charlie on the MTA," the Scollay Square station is where Charlie's wife went every day to hand the stranded commuter his sandwich "as his train goes rumbling through."

Beginning March 22, the Government Center station closed for a major renovation that will include a new entrance, new platforms and a larger fare collection area. The project is expected to take about two years.
