Mookie Betts On Slump-Busting Three-Homer Game: 'Just Swung My Way Out Of It' [VIDEOS]
BOSTON (CBS) -- Mookie Betts appears to be adjusting nicely to his new spot in the batting order. The Red Sox right fielder and new No. 3 hitter went 4-for-6 on Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, hitting three home runs into the Green Monster seats and driving in eight runs. You can watch the highlights of Betts' big day in the above video.
The Red Sox right fielder joins Ted Williams as the only Red Sox players to hit three home runs in two different games in a single season. Betts blasted three homers against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on May 31.
Betts is now up to 26 home runs and 84 RBI on the season to go along with a .313/.353/.561 slash line. He leads the major leagues with 276 total bases and 65 extra-base hits and is third in the majors with a 6.6 WAR, trailing only the Angels' Mike Trout (7.2) and the Astros' Jose Altuve (6.9).
Entering Sunday's game, Betts had been just 1-for-8 in two games against the Diamondbacks and 4-for-16 in four games on the Red Sox' homestand. By his standards, that was something of a slump - but clearly, he figured it out.
"These last couple days were just off," Betts told reporters Sunday. "So I just came in and pretty much swung my way out of it."
Betts' massive performance on Sunday makes him 7-for-18 (.389) with three homers and 10 RBI since moving to the third spot in the Red Sox batting order. If he wasn't in the AL MVP race already, he certainly slugged his way into it over the weekend.
