Mookie Betts Not Seriously Injured, Also Not Being Traded For Chris Sale
BOSTON (CBS) -- Red Rox right fielder Mookie Betts exited Friday's game against the Minnesota Twins for precautionary reasons with discomfort in his right knee, but an MRI on Saturday revealed no structural damage.
The procedure did reveal "swelling and a buildup of fluid," according to ESPN's Kyle Brasseur, but all signs point to Betts' injury as a short-term issue and the right fielder could return to the Red Sox lineup sometime this week.
Elsewhere, Betts' name was brought up in a big trade rumor by Barstool Sports' "White Sox Dave," who said that a "rock solid" source told him any trade between the Red Sox and White Sox for All-Star starter Chris Sale "starts with Betts and [Andrew] Benintendi with 3-4 more prospects added below them." That may be the real asking price, but Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe categorically shot down the very idea of trading Betts for anyone Monday morning on Toucher & Rich.
"[He's a] 23-year-old MVP candidate. They're not trading that," said Abraham, who would not even entertain the idea when asked about it.
Trade rumors involving Sale spiked over the weekend after the White Sox ace was involved in a bizarre clubhouse incident in which Sale reportedly cut up the team's throwback jerseys in protest of having to wear them for a game. Sale was scratched from his start and suspended by the team for five games after the incident. The Red Sox have reportedly checked in on Sale for a possible trade, although it apparently will never include Betts' name.
