Mont Vernon Family Establishes Kim Cates Scholarship Fund

HOLLIS, N.H. (CBS) - The man who lost his wife in a vicious home invasion two years ago in Mont Vernon, New Hampshire announced a new scholarship in his wife's honor on Wednesday.

David Cates is on a mission: to create a legacy in his wife Kim's name to help young people go to college and study medicine or nursing.

"It is a new chapter and a way to give back to the community and do something that would have been very important to Kim and is very important to me," said David Cates.

In just two months, the scholarship raised $12,000 for 11 students. And now they want to raise more with a day long concert in Hollis, New Hampshire at the Alpine Grove Banquet Facility. With help from dozens of people, the concert will feature a dozen local musicians.

WBZ-TV's Karen Anderson reports.

"I really really want this to be a great success, the biggger a success it is, the more money we raise for the kids, and quite frankly that's the reason I'm here," said David Cates.

Kim Cates was killed in her Mont Vernon home in October 2009. David was away on business, and their daughter Jaime was stabbed dozens of times, but survived.

"Now that the trials are over, I'm able to move forward a little bit. It's day by day, not quite in my face like it was during the trials, but it's still very fresh," said David Cates.

David says Jaime is doing incredibly well. They just celebrated her 13th birthday with a party with 30 friends at their home. She's getting straight A's, and just wrapped up her lacrosse season. Her team came in second in the state, and she's starting a field hockey league now.

"She's definitely keeping me on my toes, I think she's 13 going on 19 but I'm not the first person to say that about their teenage daughter," said David Cates.

The benefit concert for the Kim Cates Scholarship Fund will be held at Alpine Grove in Hollis, NH on Sunday, August 14. The concert, which will feature two dozen bands , runs from 1-8 p.m.
