Molnar On UMass QB Doyle: 'Hope He Takes That Next Step Forward'
BOSTON (CBS) - The UMass Minutemen are back in action at Gillette Stadium this Saturday, hosting MAC rival Miami (Ohio) as both teams look for their first win of the season.
UMass head coach Charley Molnar joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Marc Bertrand to chat about his team for a few minutes, saying it's very important for quarterback A.J. Doyle to bounce back on Saturday.
"I think if A.J. is healthier you would have seen a better performance on Saturday," Molnar said of Doyle's 4-for-17 day in last week's loss to Bowling Green. "I know he's had a good couple of days at practice and I really hope he takes that next step forward. Our football team desperately needs him to assert himself as our number-one quarterback."
"I think we've opened things up [on offense]; the last couple teams we've played have played a lot of zone coverage. That gives you windows and spots to throw the ball and I think he's done a good job taking advantage of it," said Molnar. "We just don't get many one-on-one matchups that allows our skill players to run down the field, beat a defender and let A.J. throw the ball up and see if we can go make a play. I'm hoping we see some man-coverage and we can exploit it this Saturday."
