Mixed Mother's Day Weekend
A steady flow of clouds, warmth and humidity continue to be steered up the east coast with SW winds aloft. Lots of clouds and periodic showers are helping to keep temps mainly in the 60's.We are watching 2 batches o showers this afternoon. A steadier batch of rain with some embedded thunder is approaching the Cape & islands where it will become wet for the rest of the day. The second batch of rain is in Northern and western new England. Cloud cover and cooler temsp today will help to stabilize any big storms from forning. Still, showers will be spreading west to east late afternoon into the evening hours.
Winds from the SW will be increasing this afternoon ahead of an approaching cold front. Winds could gust 20-30 mph at the south coast. Any thunderstorm will briefly include heavy rain, small hail and the potential for gusty winds thanks to a strong low level jet which be cruising over our heads this afternoon.
The showers out west this afternoon will be weakening across eastern MA tonight which will last off and on through midnight. After midnight, I expect the cold front to be pushing off the coast and the showers to be ending. Mother's day will start off with lots of clouds. On Sunday, another cold front will be approaching from the west which could trigger a few more scattered showers or a T'storm for the midday and early afternoon hours. Winds will be shifting to the NW with cooler drier air arriving for the end of the day with skies becoming partly sunny. Highs on Sunday will still be nice in the upper 60's and Lwr 70's.
A deepening trough over the Northeast will help to steer in an unseasonal shot of cold air into the region for Monday and Tuesday. Sunny to partly sunny skies with building afternoon cumulus with the heating of the day and the cooler air aloft. Highs will struggle to get out of the 50's nearing 60. The overnights will be particularly chilly with lows dropping down to 32 or below in the NW valleys where there is a chance for frost and freeze conditions in these sheltered valleys.
The fair weather will continue through the midweek with a warmer more humid airmass developing as winds shift back to the WSW. Highs will climb back to near 70 degrees on Wednesday which will likely be the pick of the week. A warm front will approach on Thursday to trigger a few showers, and warmer temps inot the Lwr 70's with a cold front likely to trigger a few more showers or T';storms for Friday afternoon in the mid 70's. Overall, the pattern flattens out allowing the warmth to build from the 15ht through the 20th. There will be a few risks of showers on the way...and the risk for showers could continue into next weekend as well.
