MIT Researcher: This Winter Was 'Worst Boston Has Ever Seen'
BOSTON (CBS) – This winter was bad and the numbers back it up.
"We were at the worst Boston has ever seen," MIT applied math researcher Ben Letham told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Karen Twomey.
He ran the numbers using government data and discovered just how harsh this winter really was.
"The previous record for the most snow in one month was set in 1978," he said. "We beat that record by almost 40 inches."
In the past 120 years, "There has never been a winter with anywhere near the concentrations we had this year," Letham said.
While we may have been waiting for those last few inches to put us in the record books, Letham says what we should be looking at is the amount of snow in a certain time period.
He said Boston was at a 10, when the average winter is a 3.
To put it into perspective, the Blizzard of '78 was a 7.
"We won't have quite the infamy of '78, but it's (still) a lot of snow," he said.
