Police: Woman Attacked On Milford Bike Trail

MILFORD (CBS) -- Police are investigating an assault after a woman says she was attacked by a man while walking along a very popular bike trail in Milford.

"It's complete shock and we've never seen anything strange like that," walker Brian Devenney said.

The victim, who does not want to be identified, told police last week she was walking along the Milford Upper Charles River Trail when a man hit her in the her head from behind, knocked her to the ground and attacked her with a knife.

The assault shocks walkers like Brian and Laura Devenney, who said they use this trail every week.

"Police told us about car break-ins and to keep our stuff locked up, but nothing about attacks," Laura Devenney said.

The victim posted about the incident on her Facebook page, saying how she fought off her attacker.

"This 6 foot male has a small pocket knife and was swinging it at me as I was kicking him as hard as I could and grabbing the knife. Kicking him in places that I hope left some kind of damage," the post read.

"She's a strong woman and you need to be able to defend yourself," Devenney said.

It's clear from the amount of footprints in the snow that this is a very busy walking and biking trail.

No one would ever expect to be attacked in the middle of the day, which is why the victim wants to get the warning out: if you use this trail don't go alone.

"We are going to have to rethink that during the day, it's a cowardly move," Brian Devenney said.

The woman says she suffered some minor bruises, but is expected to be okay.

Police are still searching for the suspect.
